For a laptop, my recommendation is to get another hard drive and use a drive imaging tool to move you existing data to the new drive. After looking on Google I'm still not sure what an ECC error is and how serious it is. The SATA controller cards are not very expensive, usually around $20-$30I wouldnt take any chances with a hard drive that fails diagnostics unless the system is used for unimportant purposes. This might be possible because the controller doesn't know if it lost data or just an empty area (it lacks any insight into the file system). And you should run it from the Recovery Console.
